Only a few weeks to go until the deadline for sending 2015-16 Self-Assessment tax returns.
Not only is Tuesday, January 31st the final day for completing Tax Returns online, it is also the day HMRC begin to receive unusual excuses from people who failed to complete their returns on time.
The excuses made by self-assessment customers include: “My wife helps me with my tax return, but she had a headache for ten days”; “My tax return was on my yacht…which caught fire” and “I couldn’t complete my tax return, because my husband left me and took our accountant with him. I am currently trying to find a new accountant”.
All the above reasons were unsuccessful in their appeals against HMRC.
“Blaming the postman, arguing with family members and pesky insects – it’s easy to see that some excuses for not completing a tax return on time can be more questionable than others,” said Ruth Owen, HMRC director general of customer services.
“Luckily, it’s only a small minority who chance their arm,”
Here at Ellis & Co we will prepare your Self-Assessment Tax return for you and submit it promptly, so you won’t need to ‘make up’ any excuses.
