Every summer here at Ellis & Co we are joined by an accounting and finance degree student from the University of Chester for a five week work placement.

The accounting and finance degree is a three year course which concentrates on the practical application of accounting and finance theory.

It is supported by a panel of top global business leaders including Ellis & Co.

From May 8 – June 8, 2018 Jaymi Been worked with the team at Ellis & Co, here is her blog:

I am originally from the Netherlands, however I have lived in the UK for two years now.

I moved here after I met my boyfriend from Runcorn during travelling Indonesia in the summer of 2015.

I really enjoy living in the UK and during my spare time I play hockey for the university team.

I am currently finishing my second year as an accounting and finance student at the University of Chester.

The course provides a great range of topics on accounting as well as finance.

We have completed core modules on financial and management accounting, marketing, organisational management and law, but we are also getting prepared for working at an accounting firm by improving our skills in Excel, accounting packages and management.

I was particularly interested in this course because it offers a range of modules which are not only useful in an accounting career, but in any finance career.

I am very happy that I have been put forward to complete my placement at Ellis & Co in Chester.

The staff here at Ellis & Co are very helpful, outgoing and friendly and they made me feel welcome from the first day.

This placement has given me the opportunity to learn the basics of accounting and the understanding of how an accounting firm works.

I think it is very important to gain such experience as we only learn accounting methods and not real applications at university.

During my time here at Ellis & Co I have looked at many cash books, Sage 50 Accounts Production, marketing and social media.

I am glad I have gained such experience and understanding of what an accountant does and I hope this will benefit me in making the right career choice.

Looking forward, I am hoping to do my masters in the UK in either accounting or banking and international finance and I am sitting my first CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) level 1 exam in December.

I would like to gain more experience and knowledge in this field during the next years.

Eventually I am hoping to move to a tropical country with my boyfriend after I gained relevant experience, so I can enjoy my days off on the beach.
