On Lower Bridge Street, Chester, you will find a team of expert consultants providing a personal support network to businesses across Cheshire and North Wales.
The company’s aim remains the same as it was when establishing in 1975… to make insurance personal.
“We are an independent insurance broker, providing specialist business insurance and comprehensive personal cover, said Peter Goddard, managing director of Daulby Read.
“We look after all types of businesses from one man bands to national companies, and everything in between.
“We strive to help businesses stay in business, ensuring that the right insurance is provided stopping any unexpected costs.
“We’re more than an insurance broker, we are a trusted partner which differentiates our service from the experience of buying online.”
Peter admits that the hardest part of his job at Daulby Read is informing clients that insurance isn’t about cost.
“People are now under the impression that cheap is good when it comes to insurance , that’s not the case,” he said.
“Cheap is what cheap is, you get what you pay for and often they strip the covers out of a policy to make it cheaper.
“People believe that online price comparison sites are the best, but there is no advice with online policies and no come back.
“We take the time to understand each business, how they run and what the needs of that business will be, as every business is different.
“We provide flexible cover which can accommodate changes in circumstance, reacting quickly to regulatory changes and industry factors.
“We add value, there really is no contest”.
The team of 15 work between Daulby Read’s two offices located in Chester and Wrexham.
“90% of our clients are local to the Chester and Wrexham area,” said Peter.
“We are proud to be an independent community broker, we regularly give back to the community by supporting local charities and community projects.”
Peter was made vice chairman of Gresford Athletic Football Club in June 2019 after spending three years as the treasurer and is currently working hard behind the scenes to raise £60,000 for the forthcoming season.
““We’ve held a number of events and have more in the pipeline in order to raise the money needed.”
Daulby Read is also busy supporting the next generation of insurance brokers, by taking part in the government’s insurance apprenticeship scheme which runs for 18 months.
“We’re really proud to say that this is our second apprentice here at Daulby Read, with our first flying through the course February 2018 said Peter.
It’s hard to believe that as well as running Daulby Read and working in the community, Peter is still finding time for innovation.
For the past 18 months Peter has been ‘road-testing’ a new business Xposed Risk Management Ltd.
“Xposed Risk Management focuses on cybersecurity and risk management for SMEs,” said Peter.
“This business has been created to offer cyber defence and advice to SMEs, I found that SME’s hadn’t realised they were very much under threat and the expert cyber security industry operate at a much higher cost level to make cyber security affordable..”
Since its launch two months ago the business has gone from strength to strength, and has recently been nominated for three national industry awards: UK Broker Awards, Tech & Innovation Awards and the Broker Innovation Awards.
“We are up against national and international companies, so we are definitely punching above our weight,” said Peter.
“I am very proud of the whole team.”
Daulby Read and Ellis & Co Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers have worked together on a professional level for a number of years, offering referrals and advice between their clients.
But it was four months ago that Daulby Read instructed Ellis & Co to act as its accountants.
“We wanted a local accountant that understood our business and our needs better than our former accountants,” said Peter.
“I had been talking to John Farrell for some time about moving accountants, and we finally got around to it.
“The team has really helped us in going forward.
“I would certainly recommend them as accountants and business advisers.”
